I am going to continue with the posts about how I wrote certain parts of Deadly Conflicts. I am going to start with the first chapter ok yea I know kind of predictable but there is a big reason I am going to be doing this chapter first not because it is the first chapter but because it is the most changed in the book. There is another reason I am doing this chapter first, which yes will have spoilers since you can read that for free on Amazon Kindle, Preview, as well as Barnes and Noble via their Nook and Preview system.
Deadly Conflicts defiantly didn’t start off the way it does now. The scene of her as a child was added long after I started writing the book. I had started writing the book during my college years. It originally started with the second part of chapter 1 being the start of the book. I had later added the scene of Armond finding her as a child to invest his character more into her life, to give him more of deeper connection to her as in his mind he pulled her and her mother from a dangerous situation letting him feel as though he had saved them. However, things do not go the way he originally figured they would. Instead of feeling good about saving a mother and daughter he eventually feels guilt for taking a child away from her mother later on in the book. He found her being sold by her junkie mother to a drug dealer for sex to get a fix. Once the drug dealer dragged the girl into the car he approached the girl’s mother and talks to her convincing her to go into drug rehab while putting Lilly into foster care while she got clean. He leaves the woman to make the choice on her own. Which she does and it causes a big change in her daughter’s life. As Armond promised Lilly would be returned to her mother once she got out of rehab. However, this is the first lie that changes Lilly’s life forever by Armond.
The reason I changed the start of the book to be this type of scene was due to wanting to have something that would bond Lilly and Armond deeper than with any other character in the book. It also gave her a deeper reason to hate Armond because of the fact that he took her from her mother at a young age. Especially because in her mind she could no longer have anything to do with her mother because to her mother she would have to be forever missing.
This was done because of some scenes that I was writing at the time that I was writing inspired me to take and write a new beginning to the story. It seemed to really help show that Lilly’s life truly was controlled by the Agency even from the young age of 10. The start of the book was even linked to the end of the book in several ways, which I will not mention, as that I will not spoil it.
I know there is a certain phrase that was used that was rather crass in the scene but I used it because I felt it was needed for the character. To show just how cruel he was.
I hope you enjoyed this look into the bit of my writing process. I hope to share more, without spoiling anything for you. Also remember you can find my book on Amazon. To help just click the link below.
